Ever since I was a small boy I have loved being in the woods. To call them forests in
Rochester, New York would be an exaggeration; they were not that big. Rochester
was home to Eastman Kodak. My father and grandfather were avid photographers so I
grew up in a perfect environment to absorb the passion and enthusiasm for this medium
of expression.
During my college years I worked in the summertime at Kodak and had free access to
their darkrooms and all the photographic paper I could use. My first camera was an
instamatic and soon after I bought a Mamiya Sekor SLR and set up my own darkroom. I
explored all subject matter but my favorite has always been nature, landscapes and
especially the forest. It is my comfort zone.
We lived 30 years in southern California before moving to Bellingham in 2004. The
landscape here re-ignited my passion for photography after the sterile and monotony of
Southern California (my apologies to the sun worshippers and the developers). Now I
have a studio that covers Whatcom, Skagit and the San Juan Islands. To me the
landscape is serene but powerful, comforting and enduring. My primary focus is to
capture the feeling and ambience of this landscape but not on a grand scale. I prefer
the more intimate perspective of being within the environment rather than taking
pictures of the environment. I look for images that make the viewer want to explore
the image and want to explore the landscape beyond what is in the image. I look for
the right combination of light, weather, season and landscape to create an image which
will captivate the viewer the same way that it resonated with me.
